Half Marathons Reach a Milestone & Surpass 2000 total mark in 2012

The year 2012 has been a year of tremendous growth for half marathons and marks a new milestone of surpassing over 2000 half marathons across the United States.  Half Marathons are being formed as fast as we can add them to the online calendar directories.  Halfmarathonsearch.com analyzed, searched, and compared the top half marathon directory listings across the United States and came to a total of 2005 half marathons for all US States totaled, reported on August 26, 2012.  California leads the way with the top number of half marathons, surpassing the 250 mark this year and new half marathons being added almost weekly, with Florida following as second with a total of 105 half marathons reached in 2012.  Not too far behind Florida follows Utah, Texas, and the state of Washington for most half marathons in the United States.  Both Florida and Texas hit their 100 milestone this year in 2012.

As events grow, the importance for Race Directors and Event Management companies to understand their audience, not only from a race day perspective, but also an online perspective in presenting the event website is critical.  A past article Event Websites in our Changing World of Technology, Social Media, and Accommodating the Traveling Athlete written by Nicole Blomgren, Founder and President of Fifty States HALF Marathon Club and Halfmarathonsearch.com, provides good insight into what events should be cognizant of in presenting their information for runners, to make finding an event so much easier.

The rate of half marathon additions does not seem to be slowing as we approach this last quarter of 2012, predicting half marathon totals to likely grow to between 2300 to 2500 by the end of 2013.  Half Marathon clubs and training organizations have also seen growth in 2012, such as the national running club Fifty States HALF Marathon Club www.halfmarathonclub.com , which has more than doubled over the past year, and the training organization  PRSFIT Nation www.prsfit.com which also continues to grow, training runners and triathletes, of all levels, globally.

Furthermore, the half marathon 13.1 mile distance event is a nice event to travel on the weekends to. Runners can typically experience a quick recovery after finishing a half marathon, one may not encounter when participating in a full marathon, presenting the half marathon experience to be very enjoyable running distance event for runners.

Hollywood Half Marathon Race Report

Hollywood Half Marathon Race Report by Fifty States HALF Marathon Club member Mark Trollinger

Finished the Inaugural Hollywood half marathon today. The expo was only open yesterday and it was a mad house. Definitely worth the $15 to have the shirt and number mailed to you so you can skip the expo. The course ran out of cups and from mile 4 on I had no water (they said cup your hands and they would give some). I also ended up with big leg cramps because I ran on the side of the road rather than in the center, and it was a steep incline. That said, the course was good. Universal Studios out 7 miles through Hollywood and back. Nice fans along the side. The start was great – quickly downhill for 1.5 miles and I picked up good time. First mile was 10:20, but mile 2 was 9:40 and mile 3 was 9:20. The middle miles were fine, despite the cramps. The end was a challenge – that 1.5 miles that was nice coming down sucked coming up. It was a long, steady hill that killed me. The final ½ mile was flat and made for a nice finish. Despite the hills and challenges, I finished just 10 minutes off my PR. I felt like I was doing much worse than that so I had run in the middle I think I would have easily bested my time. I would definitely do this again. This marked my 10th half overall and state number 4 for me.

Surf City Half Marathon 2012 Race Review

Race Review by Fifty States HALF Marathon Club official member George Pugh:

2/5/2012 - Surf City Half Marathon, Huntington Beach, California was by far the best distance event I have participated in so far, which includes 72 Half Marathons and 2 Fool Marathons! Everything from the Expo and packet pick up (they even had volunteers who would dog watch while their humans went through the Expo tent), to the parking and start line buses, course layout, mile markers, finish line, after snacks, and even the weather was absolutely PERFECT! The only flaw in my race day were some tight calves (remnants of the cramps in Maui) and a required pit stop at the four mile mark, but I managed to keep plugging away at the miles finishing in an OK-Good 2:24:34. A nice story along the way was that I was talking with a 58 year old from Winnipeg at the start line and we criss-crossed paths throughout the race. Heading toward the finish line I caught up to him and we pushed each other to the end finishing with the exact same time. A dip in the Pacific Ocean and ice cream later with my cousins Patti and Margie concluded a great day. I highly recommend this race and plan on doing it again.
